Caregiver (Personal Care Provider-PCP) Job Description

Position Summary:

The Caregiver (Personal Care Provider - PCP) provides compassionate, non-medical personal care and household support services according to an established plan of care. The position assists clients with activities of daily living, personal needs, and household tasks to promote safety, comfort, independence, and quality of life in their homes. 

Qualifications:

  • Completion of an approved caregiver or homemaker training program, or successful skills validation through direct observation.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in caregiving, personal care, or homemaker services preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and provide respectful, compassionate care.
  • Ability to follow client care plans and agency policies.

Job Responsibilities:

 The Caregiver/Homemaker provides support that may include, but is not limited to:


Personal Care Services:

  • Assist clients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including:
    • Bathing, grooming, oral care, skin and hair care.
    • Dressing, shaving, toileting, and personal hygiene.
    • Eating, mobility assistance, ambulation, and transfers.
  • Provide companionship, emotional support, and social engagement.
  • Assist with medication reminders as directed.
  • Encourage client independence and provide cueing or hands-on assistance when needed.

Homemaker Services:

  • Provide light housekeeping, including dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and cleaning kitchen and bathroom areas.
  • Assist with meal preparation and basic food service.
  • Perform dishwashing, laundry, and bed making.
  • Assist with grocery shopping and household errands as assigned.
  • Teach and encourage clients who are able to maintain or learn household skills.

General Responsibilities:

  • Follow the written care plan and provide services according to client needs and agency policies.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with clients, families, and agency staff.
  • Observe and report changes in the client’s condition, behavior, or home environment to the supervisor or licensed professional.
  • Identify and report safety concerns that may affect the client’s health and well-being.
  • Complete accurate service documentation, including services provided, visit dates, and times.
  • Participate in required training, staff meetings, and client care conferences.
  • Maintain client confidentiality and protect client rights, dignity, and privacy.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and agency standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic personal care, safety practices, and household support services.
  • Understanding of aging, client needs, and family interactions.
  • Basic knowledge of nutrition and meal preparation.
  • Ability to observe, document, and report client needs and changes accurately.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with clients, families, and coworkers.

Special Requirements:

  • Valid Colorado driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred, or access to dependable transportation.
  • Must meet agency employment requirements, including background check and required training.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and assist with transfers.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks for extended periods.
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to provide safe and effective care.
